Hanging Hog or Beef FAQs

What exactly is the hanging weight of an animal?

The hanging weight of either a beef or pork is the weight of the carcass after the harvest and some minimal processing (removal of hide, head, organs, etc).  The animal is now ready to 'hang' on the rail.

What are your typical hanging weights for a 1/4, 1/2 or whole pig or beef?

1/2 beef approximately 300-360 lbs, 1/4 beef approximately 150-180 lbs

Whole pork approximately 215-230 lbs, 1/2 pork approximately 110-120 lbs

How much freezer space do I need?

Roughly 2-3 cubic feet of freezer space for a 1/2 hog

Roughly 4-5 cubic feet of freezer space for a 1/4 beef OR whole hog

Roughly 6-7 cubic feet of freezer space for a 1/2 beef

How much meat will I actually take home in the package and do I get to choose my own cuts?

Hogs usually yield 70 percent of their hanging weight into packaged meat.  You will turn in your own cutting instructions for both a 1/2 or whole hog.  We will give you further instructions and a video to watch to help you through the process the first time.

Beef usually yield 62-65 percent of their hanging weight into packaged meat.  You will turn in your own cutting instructions for 1/2 beeves.  We will give you further instructions and a video to watch to help you through the process the first time. For 1/4 beef, there is a set cut sheet that we use that is either boneless or bone-in.  Click on each of the items for all the details.

What are the processing charges and butcher fees?

Beef charges are 90 cents per lb, hanging weight, for cutting and wrapping.

How are the animals harvested?

A mobile butcher comes and harvests each animal on farm.  It is very low stress as the animal is not hauled or moved out of it's known environment. It is then taken to the processing facility in Greenleaf, Idaho.

Are these the same animals/meat that I can buy on your website or in your store?

They are the very same. The only difference is where the animal is being processed.

Where do I pick up?

At the butcher in Greenleaf Idaho.  If you do request organ meats, those will be picked up at our Farm Store in addition to the butcher.

Will the meat be frozen?

The meat is flash frozen.  You will need to bring your own coolers or boxes to pick it up and transport it to your home.

Can I get organ meats, bones, and/or fat?

Yes, all the above. There is no additional charge for this.  You will need to let us know at checkout that you want these items.
